Joy Chose You.

by, Donna Ashworth

Joy does not arrive with a fanfare
on a red carpet strewn
with the flowers of a perfect life

joy sneaks in
as you pour a cup of coffee
watching the sun
hit your favorite tree
just right

and you usher joy away
because you are not ready for her
your house is not as it should be
for such a distinguished guest

but joy, you see
cares nothing for your messy home
or your bank balance
or your waistline

joy is supposed to slither through
the cracks of your imperfect life
that’s how joy works

you cannot truly invite her
you can only be ready
when she appears
and hug her with meaning
because in this very moment
joy chose you.

In this season of joy, gratitude and giving, I encourage us to pause and share in the miracle of life, the common threads of our humanity - woven together, interconnected, regardless of religion, ethnicity or statehood.

As my family celebrates Christmas, the birthday of Jesus of Nazareth, born in Bethlehem, our heads bow in prayer for our Palestinian & Israeli brothers and sisters. May we emerge as a global community, united with the intent of healing our divides and embracing one another with love, respect and empathy.

SZ Art & Culture.

We are human.
We are hopeful.
We are hurting.

We are Palestine.

We are Palestine.

The idea for “We are human. We are hopeful. We are hurting. We are Palestine.” emerged as the atrocities from Gaza, West Bank and Israel escalated. Suzanne Zahr is a Lebanese-born American citizen of Palestinian descent. In witnessing the news coverage and hearing first-hand accounts from Palestinian brethren, she was heartbroken and found herself struggling with feelings of grief, helplessness, a yearning to know more about her heritage, and a desire to deepen her connection with the people of Gaza.

Motivated by a desire to help and share the beauty of Palestinian art & culture, Suzanne connected with Yusef Hussein, Manager of Zawyeh Gallery in Ramallah, who so generously shared details of the talented artists they represent. In less than two weeks, Zawyeh Gallery and SZ Gallery curated a 30-piece collection of museum-quality prints, silkscreens and photography, representing 12 renowned and emerging artists.

The exhibit is not political; it’s about art & culture. It aims to elevate Palestinian voices that resonate with tales of displacement, resilience, and the human spirit. It's about humanizing an ethnic group that has been dehumanized.

Each artist is featured on the SZ Gallery website, allowing visitors to learn more about the artist's opinions and thoughts about Palestine. Artistic views vary. Some artists romanticize the past, some address the irony of what is happening, others express frustrations, and some share the historical changes in the region.

Palestinian art is a living testament to the enduring courage and profound identity of a people enmeshed in a decades-long conflict. These 12 artists wield their creativity as a powerful tool of expression, capturing the depth of Palestinian experiences. While a single exhibit cannot encompass the entirety of Palestinian art & culture, the SZ Gallery invites you to explore this thirty-piece collection, showcasing the rich tapestry of indigenous beauty, struggle and identity.

All art sale proceeds benefit the Palestine Red Crescent Society, in support of first responders in Gaza and the West Bank. To date, 29 works of art have **SOLD**, yielding $6,350.00 in donations, thanks to our art patrons.

Mark your calendars for our Art Reception on (First) Friday, January 5, 5-8PM. Cocktails, hot tea & sweet treats will be served.

All works of art (even those previously sold) will be on display thru January 31. All are welcome to visit between 10AM - 4PM, weekdays, or by appointment.
