Mercer Island DADU (Guest House)

Late September, Suzanne hosted an Open House of her newly built Guest House on Mercer Island. Doesn’t take much to convince Suzanne to host a party, though our entire SZ Build team wanted to express our appreciation for the dedicated sub-contractors who helped bring this vision to life. Our subs don’t always get to see the projects they work on, fully completed. Moreover, Suzanne opened her doors to any and all interested community members to tour her Detached Accessory Dwelling Unit (DADU), answering curiosities about its design and construction throughout the day.

We enjoyed a great turn-out - thank you to all who attended! And, what a treat it was having Khalil & Betty of Byblos Deli serve us lunch! If you missed it, no worries, other opportunities will come. In the interim, enjoy these photos of this lovely ‘Casita’.

Episode 8: Interior Design & Finishes

As a Design | Build team, SZ Build offers the unique advantage of leading projects from inception to completion. We thought it would be fun to share in this gratifying process as an SZ Build Video Series. Through these construction vignettes, we’ll give you a sneak peak into the sequencing and technical prowess of our rockstar subcontractors, as our designs come to life!

This 750sf Guest House on Mercer Island is nestled into the hillside, as it opens towards Western sunsets and views. With one bedroom, one bath, two sleeping lofts and a sleeper sofa, this tiny home can accommodate 6 guests comfortably. Finishes have been selected to express an earthy-modern vibe, approachable yet sophisticated. Artisanal tilework is woven into a finish palette of natural stone, concrete and wood. Warm lighting is accented by sculptural pendants and controlled with integrated smart home technology. Its live-roof blankets this Detached Accessory Dwelling Unit (DADU), keeping it warm on cool nights and absorbs the heat on sunny days. Cozy, but uncompromised.

Palestinian art is a living testament to the enduring courage and profound identity of a people enmeshed in a decades-long conflict. These 12 artists wield their creativity as a powerful tool of expression, capturing the depth of Palestinian experiences. While a single exhibit cannot encompass the entirety of Palestinian art & culture, the SZ Gallery invites you to explore this thirty-piece collection, showcasing the rich tapestry of struggle and identity.

OPENING NIGHT: Friday, December 8th, 5 - 8PM
Cocktails, warm tea & sweet treats will be served.

SZ Gallery is proudly collaborating with the Zawyeh Gallery on curating this artful collection. There are a limited number of prints for each piece. Please let us know if you have any questions about a particular work or artist.

All proceeds go to the Palestine Red Crescent Society, in support of first-responders in Gaza and the West Bank. Please consider donating directly, on this UN International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.

Meet Ed Guud - Superintendent

Earlier this year, Ed Guud joined SZ Build, bringing a diverse set of skills as a Construction Superintendent to our multi-disciplinary team. He is currently completing an extensive remodel / addition and at the forefront of coordinating sub-contractors on a new construction home, both on Mercer Island. Ed’s attention to detail, hands-on expertise and collaborative spirit contribute to positive client experiences throughout SZ’s Design | Build process.

To learn more about Ed, his background & experience, we asked a few ‘getting to know you’ questions. Fun Fact: Before Ed rolled up his sleeves on construction sites, he was a surgical tech in the medical field.
