Episode 7: The Green Roof

As a Design | Build team, SZ Build offers the unique advantage of leading projects from inception to completion. We thought it would be fun to share in this gratifying process as an SZ Build Video Series. Through these construction vignettes, we’ll give you a sneak peak into the sequencing and technical prowess of our rockstar subcontractors, as our designs come to life!

In our current episode, Suzanne shares her appreciation for site integration when it comes to the curved roofline of this Detached Accessory Dwelling Unit (DADU) on Mercer Island. Located downhill of the future Main House, this DADU roofline serves as an extension of the uphill landscape. This live roof acts as a warm blanket of added insulation over the 750 SF Guest House below. The plant varietals specified minimize the stormwater runoff into Lake Washington, while creating a thriving habitat for pollinators promoting a healthier natural environment. What a pleasure it will be observing this rooftop change color and texture through the PNW seasons. We build for the beauty, durability and longevity of our homes.

Meet Marianne Fitzwilliam - Architectural Intern

Earlier this summer, Marianne Fitzwilliam joined SZ Design | Build, bringing a diverse set of skills as an Architectural Intern to our multi-disciplinary team. She is currently completing her Master of Architecture degree from the University of Washington College of Built Environments, where she is a member of the Student Advisory Council. After a very productive and hardworking summer, Marianne joined her UW cohort in an immersive program abroad. We can’t wait until she returns to regale us of her learnings & adventures…

Scan Design Foundation Master Architecture Studio + Travel
Each year, the Department of Architecture invites a distinguished practitioner/teacher from Denmark to teach a master design studio here in Seattle. The Scan|Design Foundation provides funding to help cover the costs of a trip to Copenhagen before Autumn term to meet the year’s visiting professor.

The Scan|Design Foundation Master Studio combines international study experience with multi-disciplinary collaboration on local projects to develop planning and design solutions for Seattle’s public realm.

At SZ we offer an integrated approach to design. We actively listen to our residential clients’ goals and ambitions, while taking the time to learn more about their family lifestyle and personal expression. Though we bring the creative solutions to the design dialogue, in the end our goal is to have each unique home fit our homeowners like a glove.

We believe that Architecture & Interior Design go hand-in-hand. Our creative process flows from an overall concept, into careful space planning, followed by layering in texture, color, fixtures and artwork. Once complete, the immersive experience is cohesive, comfortable and inspiring.

Seattle Art Fair 2023 - SZ Team Picks

Seattle Art Fair, a one-of-a-kind showcase for the vibrant arts community of the Pacific Northwest, and a leading destination for the best in modern and contemporary art, returns to the Lumen Field Event Center for its seventh edition in July 2024.

The SZ Team enjoyed a wonderful day at the Seattle Art Fair, then walked over to enjoy a delicious dinner at Matsu. Couldn’t asked for a more inspiring day.
