Embright - Brand Expression in the Built Environment

October 1, 2019

As a business owner, I know what it’s like to summon the courage to take the leap and start your own business. It’s the American Dream, but in uncertain economic times there are no guarantees that hard work, talent, and dedication will lead to success. That’s why my firm is committed to helping start-ups where we can. Small businesses lead their fields in innovation and help set a new path for the rest of us, but if they’re unable to get off the ground, those new ideas will never manifest. By helping them, we also help ourselves and our community.

With understanding and excitement, we’re working on the design & construction of a 4,400 square foot start-up office design for Embright LLC, aimed to capture the company’s culture as the Clinically Integrated Network (CIN) of the Pacific Northwest. Embright strives to improve the access to and quality of healthcare, while increasing their positive influence on their surrounding communities. With SZ’s redesign recently completed, Embright’s office space is now able to accommodate their growing firm and support their highly collaborative environment through an innovative use of space.

Meet Michelle Williams and Catherine McMillan, Artists

September 30, 2019

Q&A with Michelle & Catherine - enjoy!

Why do you do what you do?

Michelle: Because I love it.  I find the process of making ceramics calming, endlessly interesting, and unbelievably fun.  I also enjoy having the opportunity to make things that people bring into their homes and their lives.  We live in a world with fewer and fewer handmade objects, and the connection people develop with the work is quite inspiring to me.

Catherine: I approach each project as an experiment (or series of experiments). I am curious about materials, techniques, chemistry, and of course aesthetic results and viewer response.

How do you work?

Michelle: I usually work in series, honing an idea or a form by making it many, many, many times.  I started making narrow bottles with long necks in 2009.  It’s still the form I make most frequently. I keep saying once I make the perfect bottle, I’ll move on.

Catherine: Prolifically, efficiently, a bit chaotic.

For Everything, There is a Season

September 30, 2019

As summer comes to a close and Autumn settles in, the SZ Team is changing with the seasons. With great pride and bittersweet joy, we send Lara Tedrow off to the University of Washington School of Architecture’s graduate program (one of only twenty graduate students selected). We took time out to toast her next chapter with a delicious London Fog Cake from Deep Sea Sugar & Salt - yum.

Lara has been an integral part of the SZ Team for almost five years, and has grown immensely, as a talented Architectural Designer & Project Manager. Thankfully, she will continue on part-time, and as her studies allow. Go get ‘em, Lara!
