Material Spotlight: Watershed Block from Rammed Earth

March 29, 2019

Cement has a giant carbon footprint and is the most expensive component in concrete masonry. But, what would you say if somebody could deliver a cementitious product with 50% less cement and a 65% reduction in embodied energy? Though that does sound like a snake-oil salesman, we've been floored by a new product by Watershed Materials called Watershed Block.

Watershed has created a modern masonry block, which is market-ready and made from recyclable materials: lime-slag mix and a geopolymer technology. What does this ultimately mean? It has a low-carbon footprint, twice the strength of concrete, 50% recyclable materials, and has a higher resistance to water and chemical erosion only to name a few positive aspects of the product. Quite frankly, there aren’t a lot of negatives surrounding this Watershed Block.

It even looks good, just as their website says: Beautiful. Affordable. Resilient. Sustainable. We can’t wait to try this out on one of our projects, check out their website for more information.

Watershed Block, it’s what’s new.
