Control Anatomy by Mahmoud Alhaj.

November 29, 2024

SZ Gallery - Mercer Island, WA
06 September - 31 December 2024

SZ Gallery presents Control Anatomy, an exhibit curated in collaboration with the Zawyeh Gallery in Ramallah, Palestine. This solo exhibition by Palestinian artist Mahmoud Alhaj explores colonial violence and the architectural mechanisms of domination and control over Palestinian geography witnessed by Alhaj who was born in Gaza. The exhibit opens Friday, Sept. 6 at 5 p.m. during the Mercer Island First Friday Art Walk.

Akin to a forensic investigator, Alhaj meticulously gathers traces of evidence left by colonial strategies that have distorted the landscape and delineated control and domination. Through his artwork, he layers photographs taken over the years and compares them to uncover changes over time. He discovers evidence in the wall, sewage dumps, military barracks, watchtowers, streets, roundabouts, and borders. Through the examination of the oppressive tools employed in the ongoing genocide and atrocities committed in the Gaza Strip, Alhaj reveals how the instruments of violence and control have shaped the day-to-day lives of those living in Gaza and subjugated Palestinians for decades.

Posters for Gaza.

March 27, 2024

Group Exhibition
in collaboration with the Zawyeh Gallery, Ramallah & Dubai

SZ Gallery - Mercer Island, WA
05 April - 31 May 2024

In this unique exhibition, twenty-six artists come together to raise their voices, through a series of posters produced specifically for this exhibition. The posters shed light on the ethnic cleansing and horrific massacres taking place in the Gaza Strip - possibly the worst in modern history - demanding the recognition of Palestinian rights to live freely on their land with dignity.

Representing a long tradition in Palestinian history, political posters were produced extensively in the seventies and the eighties by the Palestinian Liberation Organization with the contribution of Palestinian, Arab, and international artists. Posters played a crucial role in supporting the justice of the Palestinian cause and promoting it globally guided by the freedom, dignity, resilience, and the ongoing aspiration for independence, sought by Palestinians.

Uniformly sized and designed in a simplified manner, the posters of each artist reflect their uniqueness in terms of style, materials, and the underlying narratives. Steering away from the digital norm, participating artists poured their effort into producing those posters utilizing a variety of materials including acrylics, inks, charcoal, collage, and mixed media on paper, while some artists employed various digital design techniques.

Together by Juliana Kang Robinson

May 17, 2023

The SZ Gallery has the distinct privilege of exhibiting one of Juliana Kang Robinson’s more recent works of art, Together. This stunning 48”x76”x2” painting is made with Acrylic on Birch and draws you in upon initial glance. We invite you to the SZ Gallery to see this delightful piece first-hand.

Artist’s Note:

My focus as an artist is to deepen my studio practice and fully engage in creating work that embodies the spirit of unity or HanSan, Korean for "One Mountain." HanSan is the holistic notion that the whole is more than the sum of its parts. A mountain is more than simply soil, plants and rocks just as we people are stronger when unified and rooted together.

My goal is to create visual representations of this concept of HanSan or Togetherness that spur viewers to ponder the beautiful yet complexway that different parts can come together to unify and elevate us beyond the self.
