First Friday Art & Wine: Lucia Neagu - Self-Realized.

September 26, 2018

By Keith Imper, Mercer Island

The next artist in line to be featured at the Suzanne Zahr Gallery through the months of October and November is local painter Lucia Neagu (Nay-a-Goo). Ms. Neagu, a Mercer Islander, makes her residence in one of the condos behind New Seasons, which she states, “is convenient for a person my age.” However, the one problem with that statement is the 82 years-young artist hailing from Romania acts more like a 22-year-old as she bursts up her stairs with verve and vigor, making me think twice about my own health.

Ms. Neagu invites me into her home, which also acts as her studio, and I’m immediately greeted with a sea of art that she has prolifically created within the last year. No sooner then I could close my jaw from sheer disbelief, Neagu launches into her life story but quickly stops, shifts gears, and asks if I would be willing to share a little about myself. She says to me, in her Romanian accent “If we are to speak and understand each other, I would like to know a little about you and your background.” How could I say no to that? After a brief share of my artistic past we moved on to speak about art and her need to create.

Marc Vassallo’s book “Little House in the City: Designing Small Within City Limits”, explores urban homes and ADU’s as a smart response to demographic trends. As cities continue to swell, some individuals are taking a new approach to housing by decreasing square footage and adding attached dwelling units.
SZ shares in Marc Vassallo’s enthusiasm, as we relish in the opportunity to design an accessory dwelling unit for a Mercer Island family. We’re providing them with additional living space for their multi-generational family and to generate income with the increased popularity of home share rentals such as Airbnb and VRBO. Shou-Sugi-Ban or yakisugi is the traditionally Japanese technique of charring cedar boards for use in siding, decking and fencing projects. Modern applications of the centuries old craft are making a resurgence in the US and strong statement in the Pacific Northwest. This process of burning and wire brushing wood planks was originally used to replicate the natural weathering process of driftwood in Japan. This stunning charred wood offers many applications including exterior cladding, interior siding, flooring, artistic accents and more. All of which appeal to contemporary design while highlighting the original touch of the human hand. Read more by clicking link in bio.

I’ll take the dream I had last night
And put it in my freezer,
So someday long and far away
When I’m an old grey geezer,
I’ll take it out and thaw it out,
This lovely dream I’ve frozen,
And boil it up and sit me down
A dip my old cold toes in.
